After a few months of delving in the fine art of beer, Bar None needs something a little harder. Thankfully, his friend over at Dappered knew he was a whisky lover and bought him some Rogue Dead Guy Whiskey. I’m sure a few of you have noticed that I have used two different spellings of Whisky/Whiskey in one sentence. I am a Scotch guy, therefore, if it is spelled Whiskey it is not Scotch, but some other form or an imitation. Hurray for Spirit Laws!
Rogue Dead Guy is not a Scotch, but it is an American Whiskey. And a damned fine one at that. My preference of American Whiskey is generally Knob Creek and Jim Beam. Sorry Jack. Most of the time my Bourbons and Ryes are used for Manhattans. But occasionally I will drink them straight. Ok, I digress…
Rogue’s dabble into the Spirits has been a good one, maybe if you are lucky, I can get the Dappered folks to write a review of the Gin (I like it, but I am not a Gin expert). The Dead Guy Whiskey is essentially the same mix as the Dead Guy Ale sans hops. It is short-aged (1 Month) but it is definitely smooth and, like Scotch, you can taste the influence of the water. It is smooth at the front of the tongue, a bit of a bite at the back and then goes down perfectly. Shortly thereafter you get a nice warming sensation. Despite the lack of aging, I would definitely compare it to a nice inexpensive Scotch. And it is at the perfect 80 Proof. Enjoy!
