2011-2012 NCAA Football Bowl Predictions Week 1

Each week we will make our picks for that week’s bowls with the winner in Bold.  The following week we will make our predictions and then give you a tally of how we have done so far.  As of right now, we are 0-0.  We are still surprised that the Sugar Bowl passed on both #7 and #8 for #11 and #14.  It better be a good game.

New Mexico Bowl
Temple vs Wyoming

If you would have told me a year ago that I would be picking Wyoming to win a bowl let alone be in one, I probably would have laughed.  They are the real deal.  They lost to Boise State, TCU, and Nebraska (all Top 25 teams) and their final loss came to Utah State (playing on a bowl this weekend too).  Temple lost to Penn State, Ohio, Toledo and Bowling Green.  Not nearly as impressive.

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl
Ohio vs Utah State

I’ve seen Aggies and Bobcats walking the streets of the City of Trees (that’s Boise to non-Idaho folks).  I am giving Utah State a slight edge in this game despite the worse record.  Utah State has played on the Blue from Boise State’s days in the WAC and it is a closer game for them.  That said, last year I picked Fresno State to win and then I got to the stadium for the game and saw NIU warm up and was impressed.  Ohio could very well win this.  I wish I could be there, but I am currently battling a cold and like the Punter for Ohio, I hate the cold.

New Orleans Bowl
San Diego State vs UL-Lafayette

This has the makings of an early bowl that will be worth watching.  The two teams are pretty evenly matched with identical records.  It is really a coin flip but I’m giving it to the Cajuns because it is closer to home for them.

Beef ‘O’Brady’s Bowl
Florida International vs Marshall

FIU has a winning record.  Marshall barely qualified for a bowl.  I like the name Florida International, makes me feel like I need a passport to attend.

Poinsettia Bowl
TCU vs Louisiana Tech

Unless TCU slacks off and doesn’t show up because they are playing a WAC opponent in their final Non-AQ game, it is TCU.  Although La Tech’s losses did come to some tough opponents, I still am leaning TCU on this one.

Las Vegas Bowl
Boise State vs Arizona State

(aka MAACO Bowl) Arizona is limping into the bowl game.  Their coach is a lame duck.  BSU only loses if they have BCS snub hangover.  I think it is a shame that this is the game the #7 team in the country gets stuck with.

Hawaii
Nevada vs Southern Miss

I’m picking this one early (just in case I get trapped in a tech free zone when the parents come to visit).  Southern Miss destroyed a BCS birth for Houston and is one heckuva team.  I just hope Brett Favre is nowhere near this game.
