Homemade Yellow Curry Spice – #TuesdayFoodsday

It is a long held belief that curry powder is some magic powder of a curry plant or something.  But curry powder is really a British invention via their occupation of India.  Curry powder is believed to get its name from a mishearing of kari, a Tamil word meaning spiced sauce (or something similar).

This is how you can make your own yellow curry spice mix.  It works in a variety of dishes and makes a tasty curry.  I recommend using it with chicken.

Curry Powder
2 1/4 TBSP coriander seeds
15 whole black peppercorns (just under 1/4 tsp)
3 dried red chili peppers
1/2 tsp tumeric (this is where you get the beautiful yellow color)
1/2 inch piece of cinnamon stick
8 whole cloves
8 green cardamom pods (green pods)

For best results combine ingredients in a coffee grinder and grind until a powder (there will be small chunks of cinnamon and shells from coriander and cardamom).  It can also be done in a mortar and pestle, but it is a lot of work to get the cinnamon ground up properly.
