2012-2013 NCAA Football Bowl Predictions Week 2 – #NCAAFB

Each week we will make our picks for that week’s bowls with the winner in Bold.  The following week we will make our predictions and then give you a tally of how we have done so far. Winners are in Italics. At the end of Week 1 we are 1-1 after Nevada’s D choked.

While there has been much controversy in the BCS because the rules made to keep Non-AQ schools out of the BCS somehow benefitted a Non-AQ school to get into the BCS. I am kind of hoping Northern Illinois wins so several talking heads have to eat crow. I am reminded of hearing people say Boise State was not deserving of their spot in the Fiesta Bowl vs Oklahoma. That they were just a flash in the pan. We see how that has played out. The only downside is that NIU just lost their head coach. But I happened to watch NIU play in the Famous Potato bowl after they had lost their previous head coach. It didn’t make that much of a difference. Hopefully it won’t again. On to the picks.

New Mexico Bowl
Nevada vs Arizona
Analysis: Nevada may be looking for a new DC after blowing both a 21 and a 20 point lead.

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl
Utah State vs Toledo
Analysis: Toledo played pretty well after losing their best defensive player, starting QB and RB. However Toledo had problems finishing drives and turned the ball over at all the wrong times. After being on the field a lot of the game, the D for Toledo tired and Utah State opened it up.

Poinsettia Bowl
BYU vs San Diego State
Preview: BYU has had an up and down season, San Diego State has had some big wins, including a 1 point victory over Boise State. However, in situations when teams are pretty even on paper, I give it to the team for whom the game is more like a home game.

Beef ‘O’Brady’s Bowl
UCF vs Ball State
Preview: Another potentially close one, but I’m giving it to UCF. It only makes me nervous that Ball State has completely flown under my radar this season.

New Orleans Bowl
East Carolina vs UL-Lafayette
Preview: ECU is without their coach. UL-Lafayette is playing a virtual home game. Should be close. The real loser is La Tech who thought they would get a better bowl and turned this one down and is now sitting at home 9-3 and not playing in a bowl.

Las Vegas Bowl
Boise State vs Washington
Preview: Boise State the crown jewel of the Non-AQ teams (especially now that Utah and TCU have joined AQs) will be facing kind-of-neighbors in the Las Vegas bowl. Boise State has won this bowl the last 2 years (beating Utah by over 20 and Arizona State by over 30). It will be closer than in years past because Kellen Moore and Doug Martin are gone and because former BSU DC Wilcox is on the other sideline. Picking Boise in this one.
