I have spent many days of my life on the road travelling.  I am always fascinated by the choice of restaurants my travel companions will often choose.  Most of them try to find some restaurant written up in a magazine or on some fancy TV show.  While they often have their merits, one friend and I take a totally different approach.  We look for something that isn’t flashy and sometimes, down right crappy.  It is amazing how a hole in the wall can have some of the best food out there.  You don’t believe me.  Here is a list of some of my favorite hole in the wall restaurants around the U.S., eat at them and tell me I am wrong:

The Norske Nook – Osseo, WI
Oodles – St. Peter, MN – CLOSED
318 Cafe – Excelsior, MN
Vic’s Kangaroo Cafe – New Orleans, LA
Ella’s Deli – Madison, WI
Donnie Mac’s – Boise, ID – CLOSED
Voodoo Doughnut – Portland, OR
Darrell’s – Monticello, IA
Al’s Oasis – Oacoma, SD
Mothers – New Orleans, LA
Sawatdee Thai Restaurant – Twin Cities, MN
Cheng Mai Thai – Boise, ID
Tom’s Burned Down Cafe – La Pointe, WI (Madeleine Island)
