Those of you who have read this blog for a while know that I am not a fan of fruit beers. I decided to give Swill a chance on a recent visit to 10 Barrel. I figured as a shandy type beer, it might not be terrible. I figured that the grapefruit used in the brewing process could mimic the bitterness of hops and provide a decent flavor.

I was surprised at how sweet it was but even more so at how smooth the beer was. It was a warm day and it went down really smooth. I would definitely recommend Swill as a beer for a hot day. After working in the yard one or two of these would go down smooth and quench your thirst quite easily. With 4.5% ABV it won’t knock your socks off but it will give you just enough alcohol to relax a bit.

As for the flavor, it is sweet and the grapefruit powers through. With low IBUs it is not noticeably hoppy. It is sweet on the front end with just a bit of the sour of grapefruit on the back end. This is a beer that many different beer drinkers have all said they enjoy (in my company anyway) and is also quite popular with non-beer drinkers. The name is ironic because Swill was always horrible beer that grandpa drank because it was cheap. I recommend it whole heartedly.
