Some times you hear a band and think, “This band has some good potential.” Other times you hear a band and you say, “They are going to be big soon.” Hollow Wood out of Boise, Idaho is a band that I have uttered both about. I first heard them a few years ago at a now defunct music festival when Hollow Wood was significantly smaller (they are now a 7 or so piece outfit, I can’t keep track). When I heard them, they had good promise, especially since some of the members looked like they weren’t old enough to drive. As I have heard them play after that initial introduction, they have been gaining steam. Fast forward to Friday evening, I had heard from a friend that their new album was sounding amazing and that they were playing at a local venue. So I hopped on down to the concert and pressed my way into the packed coffee house/bar full of hipsters and waited for Hollow Wood to take the stage.

For someone hearing Hollow Wood for the first time, you will hear hints of a variety of bands in the midst of their uniquely distinct sound. That sounds like a paradox but it isn’t. First, the lead singer has a voice reminiscent of Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse. The band, the size of The Decemberists, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, or Arcade Fire, gives you great variety in sound by featuring songs with multiple vocalists, stacked instrumentation, and/or both. The lyrics are deeper than they should be coming from a band that is predominately under the drinking age.

As we stated, you mark our words, this band has the potential to be huge. If they are not a rising start touring/festival band in the next year I will be shocked. Their songs are infectious and are right in the wheel house of fans of Coachella, Sasquatch, Treefort, SXSW, Austin City Limits, and Bonaroo. Give them a listen, you won’t be disappointed.
